An important program in light of the recent Gulf Oil Spill, students will embark on an adventure of the marsh that teaches them the value of salt marshes and estuaries for ocean life and people. Set at the Ward Melville Heritage Organization Dr. Erwin J. Ernst Conservation Center located in the heart of an 88-acre wetland preserve at West Meadow Creek, this unique breeding area for marine life provides students with a view into the intricate world of the plants, animals and grasses that make up a marsh’s ecosystem. Guided by an experienced instructor to closely observe the environment, students will interact with the marsh’s creatures, record findings in their very own “explorer” notebooks and discover the dynamic world of the salt marsh ecosystem and their role in it.
