2026 Summer of Science Program

STONY BROOK, NY – Calling all parents of young explorers and budding scientists—registration is now open for The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s (WMHO) beloved Summer of Science program for 2026.

Held at WMHO’s pristine 88-acre wetlands preserve and the Dr. Erwin Ernst Marine Conservation Center, Summer of Science offers open-air, outdoor learning experiences designed to spark curiosity, encourage discovery, and foster a lifelong appreciation for science and the natural world. Each program is age-specific and features hands-on exploration, lab and craft activities, and student-led research guided by experienced educators and marine experts.

The Salt Marsh Explorers program, designed for children ages 6–9, will run Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Participants will explore the wonders of the salt marsh ecosystem while learning about coastal habitats and the important role humans play in protecting them.

For older students, Salt Marsh Detectives (ages 10–12) will take place Monday, August 3 through Friday, August 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Using evidence found in the natural environment, along with insights from special guest instructors and marine science professionals, participants will work together to solve a central question: How is the salt marsh ecosystem interconnected?

Each five-day session is $325 per student. Space is limited, and programs historically fill quickly.

Parents are encouraged to register early to secure their child’s spot.
